Disability pride is not just for LGBTQIA+

Disability pride is not a subset of LGBTQIA+ pride for people with disabilities. It is about celebrating our disabled identity. There have always been pride movements that weren’t about sexuality. Black pride started around the same time as LGBTQIA+ and celebrated racial identity.

There is no conflict between disability pride and LGBTQIA+ pride. There is room for plenty of pride in this world and we all have multiple identities. LGBTQIA+ pride is about sexuality, and disability pride is about disability.

LGBTQIA+ people are not excluded. Quite the opposite, LGBTQIA+ people have been central to the disability pride movement in Australia. Some people have queer pride and some people have disability pride and some people are double winners!
